Description |
Colorless to pale-yellow liquid with a pleasant, aromatic odor.(herbicide); [NIOSH] |
Sources/Uses |
Used as a chemical intermediate, solvent, heat transfer liquid, deodorant, and insecticide; [ACGIH] Used as a degreasing agent, a paint solvent, paint remover, a cylinder lubricant, and a solvent for waxes, gums, resins, tars, rubber, oils, and asphalts; [HSDB] |
Comments |
Liver and kidney injury occur in animal inhalation studies. Inhalation of saturated vapor by mice results in narcosis and death. Skin sensitization can develop after occupational exposure. [ACGIH] Inhalation of high concentrations may cause CNS effects; A skin, eye, and respiratory tract irritant; [ICSC] |

Excerpts from Documentation for IDLHs |
Basis for original (SCP) IDLH: The chosen IDLH is based on the statement by ACGIH [1971] that 1,000 ppm was fatal to guinea pigs after 20 hours [Browning 1953]. ACGIH [1971] also reported that Cameron et al. [1937] found liver damage in animals after exposure for a few hours at 50 to 800 ppm. . . . Human data: Concentrations up to 100 ppm have been reported to have caused sporadic irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract [Elkins 1959]. |
