Depression Studies: Participate in NIMH Research

What is a Clinical Trial?

A clinical trial is a research study that involves persons in actual patient care settings. Some clinical research may examine how well a new treatment works — perhaps a drug or other type of therapy; or a clinical study might explore factors that affect mental disorders, such as the role of genes and their interactions with life experiences in ways that may alter brain chemistry and lead to illness.

What is Depression?

Depression is a serious medical illness; it’s not something that you have made up in your head. It’s more than just feeling "down in the dumps" or "blue" for a few days. It’s feeling "down" and "low" and "hopeless" for weeks at a time.

Fortunately there are many treatments that can help people who have depression, and NIMH research is leading to a better understanding of depression and to the development of new and improved treatments.
