This chemical is the suspected cause of Eosinophilia-Myalgia syndrome, a toxic epidemic that occurred in 1989 among those who ingested contaminated L-tryptophan as a dietary supplement. Another scleroderma-like disorder caused by environmental poisoning occurred in Spain in 1981: toxic oil syndrome after ingestion of rapeseed oil contaminated with aromatic amines.
