Washington, D.C – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the first anniversary of the Republicans’ energy bill and its failure to address rising gas prices:

“Today, while Republicans and Big Oil celebrate the anniversary of the failed Republican energy bill, the prediction by the President’s own Department of Energy that it would increase gas prices has come true. Gas prices have skyrocketed by more than 30 percent since the Republican energy bill passed.

“The Republicans’ failed energy policy has taken us in the wrong direction, leading to record gas prices that exceed $3 a gallon, record oil prices of more than $78 a barrel, record oil profits that have increased 32 percent, and record dependence on foreign oil.

“The Bush Administration’s budget fails to curb our addiction to oil, slashing funding and reneging on promises to invest in alternative energy sources. The Bush budget proposes 46 percent less for renewable energy research than the level promised in the Republican energy law, and cuts funding for energy efficiency and conservation programs.

“Democrats have a New Direction for America that will achieve energy independence within 10 years, by promoting alternatives that send our energy dollars to our Midwest, not the Middle East.”
