Congressman Bob Filner
is a long-time advocate for women and children:
Bob is supporting many bills to ensure that
children have the opportunity for a healthy,
productive and successful life--legislation that
protects our children from violence and provides
them with the education, healthcare, quality
after-school programs, nutrition, and shelter
that they need. Two of the many bills for
children that he is supports are the Focus on Committed and Underpaid Staff for
Children’s Sake (Focus Act), which makes funding
available for the provision of quality child
care, and the Foster Opportunities
for Success through Higher Education Reform
(Foster Act), which
improves the ability of foster care youth to
attend and succeed in higher education. He is
also working with grassroots organizations
towards the goal of ending worldwide poverty
within a decade.
Bob strongly supported the
re-authorization of the Violence against Women
Act in January 2004, which provides federal criminal provisions
and grant programs to improve the criminal
justice system’s response to domestic violence,
sexual assault, and stalking--and to provide
critical services to victims. It also
establishes a domestic violence hotline,
supports battered women’s shelters and rape
prevention programs, and contains a provision to
help stop the international trafficking of human
beings.
Bob has asked to become an original co-sponsor to
the Prevention First Act, which works to reduce the
number of abortions by providing access to
contraception and sex education. This bill
will be introduced very soon.
Bob is a proud co-sponsor of
