WASHINGTON – Today, members of the fiscally conservative Democratic Blue Dog Coalition honored California Representative Dennis Cardoza for his leadership in restoring fiscal responsibility and accountability to the federal government. As a Blue Dog, and senior member of both the House Rules Committee and House Agriculture Committee, Rep. Cardoza has played an integral role in the reshaping of American fiscal policy and the reinstitution of commonsense pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) budget rules.

“Representative Cardoza has been a leader in the Democratic effort to reestablish Congress’ commitment to fiscal restraint and balancing the budget,” said Representative Mike Ross (D-AR), Blue Dog Co-Chair for Communications. “One should look no further than this year’s Farm Bill for evidence of Rep. Cardoza’s commitment to the enforcement of PAYGO as a means through which we can restore fiscal discipline in Washington.”

Earlier this year Rep. Cardoza, along with other members of the House Agriculture Committee, crafted a fiscally responsible Farm Bill that complies with PAYGO rules and adheres to the standards of fiscal discipline Blue Dogs have advocated throughout the 110th Congress.

“In this session of Congress we Blue Dogs, now 47 members strong, are a force to be reckoned with,” said Cardoza. “The PAYGO rules this session have been tough, because discipline is tough, but the rules are forcing this Congress to operate responsibly, the same way millions of American families do – without running up colossal debts.”

Under the leadership of Representative Cardoza and the Blue Dog Coalition, the House rules package for the 110th Congress includes key principles of the Coalition’s plan to restore fiscal responsibility and accountability to the federal government. Specifically, the package requires pay-as-you-go budget discipline, known as “PAYGO,” with no new deficit spending. This rule was in place when the nation had its first balanced budgets in nearly 30 years from 1998 to 2001.

The fiscally conservative Democratic Blue Dog Coalition was formed in 1995 with the goal of representing the center of the House of Representatives and appealing to the mainstream values of the American public. The Blue Dogs are dedicated to a core set of beliefs that transcend partisan politics, including a deep commitment to the financial stability and national security of the United States. Currently there are 47 members of the Blue Dog Coalition.
