WASHINGTON – Congressman Dennis Cardoza (D-Merced) last night voted in favor of a bill that will fund the Department of Defense through the remainder of the fiscal year and cut discretionary federal spending by 1 percent. The defense spending bill, which passed the House by a vote of 308-106, also contains $29 Billion in badly needed relief for gulf coast communities devastated by Hurricane Katrina and $3.5 billion in funding for Avian flu preparedness.

“As our troops risk their lives on behalf of all of us, we must ensure they have everything they need to do their job,” said Cardoza.  “In addition to funding our military, this bill will help bring relief to those suffering on the Gulf Coast and fund preparedness for a global flu pandemic. The across-the-board discretionary spending cuts in this bill will help us meet these vital national priorities in a fiscally responsible manner.”
