WASHINGTON – Rep. Dennis Cardoza today applauded the passage of the Security and Accountability For Every (SAFE) Port Act.  The Bill, which overwhelmingly passed the House of Representatives today, will enhance security at United States ports, and track and protect containers headed to the United States. Cardoza also supported an amendment to the bill that would have mandated that all containers entering the U.S. be screened.

“For too long, the federal government has failed to act decisively on this critical issue,” said Cardoza. “The SAFE Port Act is a big step towards securing our ports and preventing grave threats from reaching our shores. I will continue to fight for the scanning 100 percent of all containers entering the United States.”

The SAFE Ports Act is a comprehensive proposal to strengthen the maritime transportation system through a layered security strategy that builds on existing initiatives to secure the supply chain from the point of origin to delivery in the United States. Specifically, the bill takes steps to: prevent threats from reaching the United States, track and protect containers en route, and harden security at U.S. ports. This bill authorizes approximately $5 billion for port and cargo security programs over the next six years.

Dan Lungren (R-CA) and Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA) introduced the legislation on March 14, 2006.
