Congressman John Carter

In 2002, Congressman John R. Carter was elected to represent Texas' Thirty-First Congressional District. In November 2006, Congressman Carter was unanimously elected by his peers to serve in the House Republican leadership as the House Republican Conference Secretary for the 110th Congress.

At the beginning of the 109th Congress, Congressman Carter was elected to serve on the House Appropriations Committee by the House Republican Steering Committee. Congressman Carter sits on two Appropriations subcommittees: Military Quality of Life and Veterans Affairs, and Homeland Security.

Carter also continues to serve on the House Republican Steering Committee, an official group of members who are in charge of placing members on committees, where he has been a member since being elected to Congress.

A true Texan, Congressman Carter was born and raised in Houston and has spent his adult life in Central Texas. Carter attended Texas Tech University where he graduated with a degree in History and then graduated from the University of Texas Law School in 1969. Congressman Carter and his wife, Erika, have been happily married since June 15, 1968 and have four children.


About the Secretary's Job
In addition to serving as part of the leadership and communications team for Republican Conference Members, the Secretary holds the responsibility of maintaining the journal and minutes of Conference meetings and proceedings.
