There are two
major types of cancer registries: hospital-based (institution-based)
registries and population-based registries. There are
two sub-categories under hospital-based (institution-based)
registries: single hospital (single institution) registry
and collective or multi-institution registry. Depending
on the operators, population-based registries can be administrative,
research, or cancer control oriented. |

The maintenance of a registry of cancer cases serves many
purposes. The recording of cases diagnosed and treated in
a single hospital has a primarily clinical function. These
cases are a valuable resource for monitoring and evaluating
the work of the institution, including the end results. Registries
which record the cancer cases arising in a defined population
have rather different goals, which can be broadly categorized
as assisting in planning and evaluating cancer-control activities
for the populations concerned, and providing a data resource
for epidemiological studies of cancer causation.
