Just as baby boomers are hitting their 60s and a bad economy has vaporized retirement accounts, San Diego's Senior Community Centers is unveiling a new model for a senior center.

Today, the nonprofit group will announce a $3 million grant from the Rancho Santa Fe-based Gary and Mary West Foundation that will allow it to buy a downtown San Diego building to replace its cramped lunch center on Broadway.

The goal is to create a model that can be adopted nationally, with a focus on educating seniors about health issues and computers and linking them with volunteer positions.
