The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), a leading supporter of basic biomedical research, will play a key role in a number of activities in the National Institutes of Health’s new Roadmap for Medical Research. Announced earlier this week, the NIH Roadmap is a series of far-reaching initiatives that seek to transform the nation’s biomedical research capabilities and speed the movement of research discoveries from the bench to the bedside.
The NIH Roadmap initiatives, spearheaded by NIH Director Elias A. Zerhouni, M.D., were developed with input from more than 300 nationally recognized leaders in academia, industry, government, and the public. All NIH components will participate in Roadmap activities. NIGMS will take part in initiatives that fit most closely with the Institute’s mission to support basic biomedical research and training that lay the foundation for advances in disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
“These Roadmap initiatives will synergize with efforts that are already under way at NIGMS and will increase the rate at which basic discoveries can be made and then translated into clinical applications,” said NIGMS acting Director Judith H. Greenberg, Ph.D.
In the NIH Roadmap’s New Pathways to Discovery category, NIGMS is participating in initiatives in the areas of molecular libraries, structural biology, bioinformatics and computational biology, probes for imaging, proteomics technology development, and nanomedicine. NIGMS is also involved in the Research Teams of the Future category, as these initiatives tie into the Institute’s long-standing efforts to promote interdisciplinary research and training and to encourage high-risk research.
