Ehlers lauds Whitman for service as EPA Administrator

Congressman compiling list of recommendations for replacement

WASHINGTON - Congressman Vernon J. Ehlers made the following statement Wednesday in response to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Christine Todd Whitman's announced decision to resign from her post, effective June 27. Ehlers, R-Grand Rapids, is chairman of the Environment, Technology and Standards Subcommittee of the House Committee on Science:

"I have the utmost respect for Christie Whitman and the work she has done as administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

"When President Bush announced her as his choice for EPA administrator shortly after the 2000 elections, I literally jumped for joy. She was a very good choice. I think she did a fantastic job as EPA administrator under very difficult circumstances. I can't praise her enough for the job she's done."

"Just last Monday, I had the privilege of introducing her to the Economic Club of Grand Rapids. After working for about 18 months to get her to come to Grand Rapids, I'm glad we were able to host her before she made this decision public.

"Although I was not aware that she had made this decision prior to her speech to the Economic Club, it became clear to me that she was thinking about this when we talked after the speech. I tried to talk her out of resigning, but it was clear to me that she misses her family and that is the biggest factor.

Congressman Ehlers said he has already begun to compile a list of potential replacements and has asked for input from a variety of environmental groups. He plans to submit his recommendations to President Bush in the near future.
