Module Level Instructional Goals
Users of this module will gain a thorough knowledge and understanding
of coding guidelines covered in ICD-O-3, specifically and
know how to use them in their coding activities.
Module Level Instructional Objectives
After completing the content of the module, the users of
this module will be able to:
- relate briefly the historical background of ICD-O;
- relate briefly differences between ICD-O and ICD-10;
- describe the structure and format of ICD-O-3; and
- use ICD-O-3 as a reference tool for accurately coding
the site and histology of a neoplasm based on the information
from a pathology report.
Unit One: Historical Background
Unit Goal
Users will be familiar with the historical background of
ICD-O.
Objectives
After completing this unit, users will be able to:
- name a few important publications in the past which influenced
the content and structure of ICD-O; and
- name the organizations mentioned in this learning unit
that were responsible for activities related to the evolution
of ICD-O.
Unit Two: Differences between ICD-O & ICD-10
Unit Goal
Users will be familiar with the differences between ICD-O
and ICD-10.
Objectives
After completing this unit, users will be able to:
- describe major differences between ICD-O and ICD-10 in
terms of neoplasm coding.
Unit Three: Structure & Format of ICD-O, Third Edition
Unit Goal
Users will be familiar with the structure and format of ICD-O.
Objectives
After completing this unit, users will be able to:
- describe the general structure and format of ICD-O-3;
- describe the structure of a topography code and a morphology
code;
- describe the format of the numerical list and alphabetical
index;
- explain the meaning of "NOS" and describe how
it is used;
- explain briefly how the hematologic malignancies are coded
in ICD-O-3; and
- mention several important things that should be taken
into consideration in using the lymphoma and leukemia sections
of ICD-O-3.
Unit Four: Coding Rules for Topography & Morphology
Unit Goal
Users will be familiar with, and understand, the ICD-O-3
coding rules, and will code the site and histology of neoplasms
accurately and quickly by using the ICD-O-3 manula as a reference
source.
Unit Five: Multiple Primary Neoplasms
Unit Goal
Users will gain some understanding about the coding difficulties
caused by the different multiple primary rules and learn how
to solve these problems using appropriate standards and guidelines.
Unit Six: Coding Exercises
Unit Goal
Coding exercises provided in this unit will let users put
their knowledge and skills learned from this module into practice.
Unit Seven: References
