Forum Highlight: Rural Coalition Tackles Growing Prescription Drug Abuse Problem
Among the many areas of the country hit hard by the prescription drug abuse epidemic, Clinton County, Ky. is near the top of the list. In one year alone, this rural town of only 9600 people had 12,000 prescriptions written for the drug Hydrocodone, a powerful narcotic pain reliever. State and local leaders knew they had to do something, so a few years ago the Clinton County Alliance for Prescription Drug Diversion launched a prescription drug abuse prevention initiative using an SPF State Incentive Grant (SIG).

Teens Frequently Mention Risky Behaviors on Social Networking Sites
About half of teens reference substance use or other risky behaviors on social networking Web sites, such as MySpace, a recent study found. The study was published in the January issue of the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine. A related study notes that developing online interventions using these social networking venues may be a cost effective way to reduce risky behaviors. Learn how to use social networking sites for prevention and intervention efforts during two workshops at CADCA´s upcoming National Leadership Forum XIX.

President Obama Names Edward Jurith as Acting ONDCP Director
The Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) announced that Edward H. Jurith has been appointed as ONDCP´s Acting Director. Jurith has served as General Counsel of the ONDCP since 1994. He was appointed to serve as the Acting Director of ONDCP by President Obama on January 20, 2009.

Get the Scoop on the STOP Act at CADCA Forum
If you´re a STOP Act Grantee or interested in becoming one, then—as the popular phrase from American Idol says—"your coalition…is on their way to Hollywood!" Maybe not Hollywood, but the next best thing. For CADCA´s 2009 National Leadership Forum, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration´s (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) and CADCA joined forces to create a special track of STOP Act workshops. This opportunity is solely for newly funded STOP Act coalitions or coalitions seriously interested in becoming one so that they too can strengthen their efforts to reduce underage drinking.

National Campaign Helps Build Awareness of Children of Alcoholics
An estimated one in four U.S. children is exposed to a family alcohol problem, and countless others are affected by familial drug abuse. In fact, children of drug addicted parents are the highest risk group among children to become alcohol and drug abusers later in life, yet few treatment programs and preventive initiatives target this population. Coalitions can play a major role in raising awareness about this issue by planning local campaigns or activities during Children of Alcoholics Week, observed each year during the week of Valentine´s Day.

Members of Congress Participating In Capitol Hill Day Events
During Capitol Hill Day, at CADCA´s 19th Annual Leadership Forum, eight members of Congress will participate in the various Capitol Hill Day events on Tuesday, February 10. All Forum participants are encouraged to take advantage of these unique opportunities to hear from distinguished members of Congress, network with their staffs and each other.

CADCA Hiring for Two Positions
