Instructional Goals

Users of this module will gain some basic knowledge and understanding of cancer registry operations and procedures.

Instructional Objectives

After completing the content of the module, the user of this module will be able to:

  • name the two major types of cancer registries;
  • describe how cancer registry goals are defined;
  • name some of the details to be included in cancer registry position description;
  • mention the factors that affect registry staffing;
  • explain why every registry within a CoC-approved cancer program must develop and maintain procedures manual;
  • describe how the reference date is set;
  • describe what a reportable list is and what organization is responsible for its development;
  • define what data standards are and explain why they are so important;
  • name some of the organizations involved in determining data standard;
  • define data sets and describe how they differ due to different requirements of standard setters;
  • explain why standard code categories must meet multiple data goals;
  • explain why both technical and non-technical elements must follow rules for code category assignment;
  • describe how data edits work in improving the data quality;
  • explain why case consolidation is closely related to both code category assignment and data editing; and
  • describe briefly data management procedures of cancer registries.
