Research Training

One of the most visible manifestations of NCI's commitment to train foreign cancer researchers can be found in the cadre of international visitors working in NCI laboratories. In FY2007, almost one thousand such visitors representing 81 countries contributed to the intramural projects of NCI's Center for Cancer Research while preparing themselves for their own careers in cancer research. The contribution of these training activities to the worldwide effort to reduce suffering and death due to cancer is evidenced by the fact that many current leaders in cancer research around the globe spent time earlier in their careers. The majority of these international visitors to NCI intramural laboratories are supported under the NIH Visiting Program.

In addition to training in NCI intramural laboratories, the NCI Office of International Affairs (OIA) also partially supports training of scientists from low- and middle-income countries in U.S. extramural laboratories and in overseas laboratories located in other high-income countries. In FY2007, OIA sponsored overseas scientists from Argentina, Belarus, Brazil, Chile, China, France, India, Iran, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine to be trained in cancer institutes, hospitals, and universities located across the United States. Also in FY2007, OIA sponsored trainees from the Ukraine and Turkey to be trained in laboratories located in Poland and the United Kingdom.

Each year, individuals from a number of foreign countries participate in the NCI Summer Curriculum in Cancer Prevention Courses, sponsored by the Office of the Director. The courses include The Principles and Practice of Cancer Prevention and Control Course, and The Molecular Prevention Course. In 2007, sponsored participants came from Albania, Brazil, China, Georgia, Ghana, Haiti, India, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nicaragua, Niger, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Tunisia, Turkey, Vietnam, and Zambia.
