Can you post an example that will cause this problem?

The declaration is
int nifti_hdr_looks_good(const nifti_1_header * hdr)

i.e., the input is actually a nifti_1_header structure, so the presumption is that we had read in correctly already before we call this function. Hence, it is the duty of the calling program to set the last 4 bytes in hdr properly.
