Advocate Role in NCI Translates
NCI understands that the ultimate consumers of cancer research are patients, their families and friends, and the many others affected by the disease. Additionally, NCI believes that consumers of cancer research should be involved in NCI’s programs and activities because their diverse perspectives enhance research and will ultimately improve outcomes.
Through a series of approximately 30 poster discussion sessions based on the framework of the TRWG Pathways to Clinical Goals, meeting participants will create research opportunities from abstracts submitted by NCI grantees. The research opportunities will be used to assess the range and quality of potential concepts to be advanced to the TRWG-recommended Prioritization Process.
NCI believes that the patient perspective is essential to this meeting and over 40 advocates have been selected to participate. Two advocates will participate in each poster discussion session and ensure the inclusion of the patient perspective in the discussion.
Advocate Nomiation and Selection Process
1. NCI Program Directors invited principal investigators (PIs) in translational research to present their research at NCI Translates: The NCI Translational Science Meeting through poster session discussions.
2. Those PIs were then asked to nominate advocates to participate in the NCI Translates meeting.
3. Nominated advocates submitted information and their request to participate.
4. NCI received many high-quality nominations from the advocacy community by the deadline.
5. A committee of NCI staff and an advocate (who acted as a consultant) assessed the submitted information for the advocate’s level of applicable research advocacy experience.
6. Nominations were matched with poster session topics. Matching was based on self-reported ability to contribute as an advocate to specific scientific areas.

Summary Teleconference
The Office of Advocacy Relations (OAR) is planning for a public teleconference on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. ET to discuss the outcomes of the NCI Translates meeting with the advocacy community. Those who were selected to attend and anyone who is interested in research advocacy in translational research is encouraged to participate.
