Gastrointestinal Cancer Steering Committee
The NCI Gastrointestinal Intergroup was the first Disease-Site-Specific group to transition into a Scientific Steering Committee; the Gastrointestinal Steering Committee (GISC). This transition occurred in January 2006. The group will address, design, and prioritize phase 3 trials in gastrointestinal cancer that leverage current Intergroup, Cooperative Group, Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE), and Cancer Center structures and involve the broad oncology and advocacy communities. The GISC will function to harmonize an efficient, cost-effective, science-driven, and transparent process that will identify and promote the “Best Science” in gastrointestinal cancer clinical research. Members of the GISC include all Cooperative Group gastrointestinal disease committee chairs, SPORE, Cancer Center and R01/P01 investigators along with community oncologists, a biostatistician, patient advocates and NCI staff.
The GISC is currently composed of the Steering Committee, and six specific disease-site task forces (TF): Colon, Esophago-Gastric, Pancreatic, Rectal/Anal, and the newly formed Neuroendocrine and Hepatobiliary TFs. A major goal of the GISC and its associated TFs is to increase the efficiency of clinical trial collaboration, reduce trial redundancy (phase 3 and phase 2), and increase information exchange at an early stage of trial development. The GISC is responsible for the evaluation and prioritization of clinical trial concepts presented to the Committee by the TFs.
Each member of the GISC is expected to regularly participate in the decision making activities of the Committee through monthly teleconferences and face-to-face meeting that will be held, when possible, in conjunction with national symposiums. Additionally, members of the GISC and its associated TFs will plan and participate in State-of-the-Science Meetings.
