ULTRASOUND a non-invasive technique to locate abnormalities in the pelvis or other areas by recording the patterns of sound waves reflected by tissues. Also called: ultrasonography, echography, sonography, gynecologic sonogram. The report is sometimes called a scan.

Key words/possible involvement: density, mass effect, area of increased attenuation,

abnormal density, abnormal echo, adnexal mass, cystic mass.

Other words/no involvement: if there is no specific reference to mass, density, metastasis, or lesion.

ABDOMINAL ULTRASOUND a noninvasive technique to locate abnormalities in the abdomen by recording the patterns of sound waves reflected by tissues. Also called: ultrasonography, echography, sonography, abdominal ultrasonography, sonogram. The report is sometimes called a scan.

Key words/possible involvement: density, mass effect, area of increased attenuation, abnormal density, abnormal echo, cystic mass.

Other words/no involvement: if there is no specific reference to mass, density, metastasis, or lesion.

PELVIC ULTRASOUND a noninvasive technique to locate abnormalities in the pelvis by recording the patterns of sound waves reflected by tissues. Also called: ultrasonography, echography, sonography, abdominal ultrasonography, gynecologic ultrasound, sonogram. The report is sometimes called a scan.

Key words/possible involvement: density, mass effect, area of increased attenuation, abnormal density, abnormal echo, cystic mass, adnexal mass.

Other words/no involvement: if there is no specific reference to mass, density, metastasis, or lesion.

PROSTATIC ULTRASOUND a recently developed technique to locate areas of adenocarcinoma within the prostate and to assess whether the prostatic capsule is intact. Also called: transrectal ultrasound, TRUS, ultrasonography, echography, sonography. This procedure cannot assess lymph node size, but may be useful in guiding needle biopsies.

Key words/possible involvement: density, mass effect, area of increased attenuation, abnormal density, abnormal echo.

Other words/no involvement: if there is no specific reference to mass, density, metastasis, or lesion.

RENAL ULTRASOUND a noninvasive technique to locate abnormalities in the kidney and renal pelvis by recording the patterns of sound waves reflected by tissues. Also called: ultrasonography, echography, sonography, kidney ultrasound, and sonogram. The report is sometimes called a scan.

Key words/possible involvement: density, mass effect, area of increased attenuation, abnormal density, abnormal echo, cystic mass.

Other words/no involvement: if there is no specific reference to mass, density, metastasis, or lesion.

THYROID SONOGRAM also called thyroid ultrasonography, thyroid scintigraphy. Differentiates cysts from solid tumors.

Key words/possible involvement: area of decreased uptake, cold spot, cold nodule, nonfunctioning nodule, area of decreased echoes, irregular echoes, mass, nodule, space occupying lesion.

Other words/no involvement: no specific reference to visible abnormality, normal size, shape, and position, as well as references to benign adenomas, cysts, congenital anomalies, and other benign conditions.

ULTRASOUND OF TESTES a recently developed technique to locate areas of cancer within the testes and to assess whether the testicular capsule is intact. Also called: ultrasonography, echography, sonography.

Key words/possible involvement: density, mass effect, area of increased attenuation, abnormal density, abnormal echo.

Other words/no involvement: if there is no specific reference to abnormality of the testes.
