| Minority Health: Coverage | | |
| | | Minority Health: Coverage People of color are more likely to be uninsured than are whites, largely reflecting lower rates of employer-based coverage. The lack of health insurance affects an individual's ability to obtain care and has consequences for their health and financial well-being. Among the non-elderly population, Latinos and Native Americans are 2 to 3 times as likely to be uninsured as whites. Medicaid is a particularly important source of coverage for minority Americans, helping to offset the lower rates of employer-based coverage. Medicare, the major source of coverage for the elderly, provides financing for basic health services but generally does not cover outpatient prescription drugs. This is an issue for all Medicare beneficiaries. Reducing disparities in care will require efforts to expand coverage and assure the adequacy of coverage for needed services such as prescription drugs. |
