The Great East River suspension bridge connects the cities of New York and Brooklyn. This is the view from Brooklyn, looking west. After 14 years of innovative construction, the world's largest suspension bridge spanned the swirling waters between lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. The day-long dedication was May 24, 1883. From one of the towers, more than 150 feet above the roadway, a worker reported "the fog hung dense, opaque, tangible, like a dull ocean obscuring all below." Almost at eye level, the worker could see the spire of Trinity Church, then the tallest building in New York.
