- NCI undertook an unprecedented internal and external review process, with surveys and community forums
2003
- Case Studies of Existing Human Tissue Repositories is published
- National Biospecimen Network (NBN) Blueprint is published
- Planning begins for a biorepository pilot project for Prostate Cancer SPOREs
2004
- NCI conducts an internal inventory of NCI-supported biorepositories
- Plans for Prostate Cancer SPORE pilot project are finalized
2005
- NCI forms Biorepository Coordinating Committee to gather and evaluate all existing authoritative best practices in biobanking
- NCI Office of Biorepositories and Biospecimen Research is established
- Two sentinel national workshops are convened, on “Best Practices for Biorepositories that Support Cancer Research” and “Biospecimen Ethical, Legal, and Policy Issues” to provide recommendations to NCI
- Biorepository Coordinating Committee recommendations are submitted to the National Cancer Advisory Board
