Saudi Arms Deal is Unwise

February 24, 2008

It is unwise for the United States to sell arms to Saudi Arabia. The President has proposed the sale of 900 Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs) tail kits, a weapon known for its sophisticated precision. I signed a resolution opposing the arms sale and have called on other Republicans to join me in a bipartisan effort to take a stand against this deal.

There was no consensus in Congress to stop the arms sale before a February 14 deadline. According to the Congressional Research Service, it can still be halted at any point until Saudi Arabia actually takes possession of the weapons. It is imperative that Members from both parties pursue all possible options to stop this sale.

U.S. involvement in the Middle East is crucial to establishing peace in a region that is constantly in turmoil. Strengthening nations in this volatile region will be critical to its stabilization. Sometimes it is difficult to determine who our allies are and we must not risk our national security.
