Helping Children with Autism

March 26, 2008

As a member of the Congressional Autism Caucus, I have been focused on learning more about autism and how we can help improve the lives of those families who struggle with it.

Research shows that autism has been on the rise over the last decade, affecting approximately 1 in 150 children.  These numbers are staggering.  I have heard from many parents who fear that many childhood vaccines, specifically those with mercury, have caused autism in their children.  Because of this growing concern, I am a cosponsor of H.R. 881, the Mercury-Free Vaccines Act, to reduce exposure to mercury through vaccines.  The bill prohibits children under the age of six and pregnant women from receiving vaccinations that contain mercury.

We also need to make sure that those with autism and their families are provided with the services they need to live richer, fuller lives. That’s why I am a co-sponsor of the Expanding the Promise for Individual with Autism Act. This bill would establish a state grant program to improve access to evidence-based treatments, interventions, and services for children and adults with autism. I will continue to do all I can as Member of Congress to protect our children from this disease.
