Grassroots Activism Essential for Policymakers

May 2, 2007

While I have a strong history of bi-partisan efforts to maintain integrity within our government, I do not support the Executive Branch Reform Act. The President must have access to reliable information that may not be available to the public and this bill would jeopardize that, creating national security problems.

The provisions in the bill limiting grassroots activities also concern me. Grassroots efforts are vital to setting policy in the United States. In order to make informed decisions for our country, it is necessary for the President and Members of Congress to receive unfettered information. Citizens should be able to freely and voluntarily contact their elected officials on important issues.

Serving in Congress is a privilege. I have lived and worked my entire life in East Tennessee and our people demand the highest standards in government. I will continue fighting to increase accountability and transparency in Washington, while protecting grassroots efforts.
