Serbian Government Must Improve Care for Disabled

December 3, 2007

News reports coming out of Serbia about the treatment of its most vulnerable citizens are very disturbing. These reports are a call to action for the international community to respond to these abuses. For years, Serbia has been a war-torn country as it has fought for independence. Unfortunately, government monies have been dedicated to supporting Serbia’s battles, often leaving other programs, like health care for the disabled, without much funding or attention.

The United States has consistently provided aid to Serbia as it rebuilds and develops, provided the government meets certain conditions. The conditions for U.S. aid include cooperating with the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia’s prosecution of war crimes, ending support for separate Bosnian Serb institutions, and protecting minority rights and the rule of law. Similar requirements have been included in the House’s version of the foreign aid spending bill.

According to the State Department, U.S. officials are meeting with the Serbian government to help improve its mental health facilities. While the United States cannot always control what goes on in other countries, we should use our influence as the greatest country in the world to protect the freedom of all people, especially those with disabilities. Thank you for speaking out on behalf of those most in need.
