Innovative energy solutions needed to achieve energy independence

February 16, 2007
We must reduce our dependence on foreign sources of energy. Our economy and national security depend on it. As Co-Chairman of the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Caucus I have worked hard to promote legislation that will secure America's energy independence, advance energy efficient technologies and protect the environment by increasing our use of renewable energy sources.

The CLEAN Energy Act, H.R. 6 is not the best way to achieve our goal of energy independence. Despite the stated intent to make us more energy independent, the CLEAN Energy Act will actually make us more energy dependent. Taking away tax incentives for domestic producers while not taxing foreign producers of oil from places like Iran and Venezuela will only increase foreign production.

The CLEAN Energy Act passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 264-163. It is now up to the Senate to act on this legislation. My hope is that Congress can work together to pass solid energy reform legislation that will offer innovative, forward-thinking solutions to our energy problems.

As a long time advocate for renewable and alternative energy, I know very well what must be done to protect the environment, secure our national interests, and create a robust economy for the future.
