Spratt: No Taxes on Internet Access

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. John Spratt (D-SC) joined a majority of his House colleagues Tuesday in giving final approval to a bill to extend the ban on taxes on internet access.

“People don’t want to be taxed on internet access,” said Spratt.  “This bill would prevent toll roads on the information super highway, and ensure affordable internet access and broadband services for consumers and businesses.  I was pleased to support it.”

The bill, the Internet Tax Freedom Amendments Act, H.R. 3678, would extend for four years the ban on state and local taxes on internet access, as well as the ban on multiple and discriminatory taxes on electronic commerce by state and local governments.

“It’s not a permanent ban, but it’s the best we could do right now,” said Spratt.  “Eventually, I would like to see Congress pass a permanent ban on internet taxes, and I am cosponsor of a bill to do just that, H.R. 743, the Permanent Internet Tax Freedom Act.”
