Music Education Bill Cosponsored by Spratt Passes House

WASHINGTON – The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed a resolution cosponsored by Rep. John Spratt (D-SC) to recognize the importance of music education.

“Students in music classes learn to discipline themselves, to think analytically, to communicate, and to work together,” said Spratt.  “They are also less likely to be involved with drugs, gangs, or alcohol, and have good attendance rates in school.  I was pleased to cosponsor this resolution and see it pass the House.”

NAMM, the International Music Products Association, thanked Spratt for cosponsoring the resolution.

“Music education stands along side other core academic subjects in helping students achieve in school and in life.  Music and arts education are, for many students, the reason for coming to and staying in school.  This resolution supports the ongoing work of educators, parents, and citizens who believe that music education is not a frill or extra-curricular activity -- it is basic to a whole education for every child,” said Mary Luehrsen, NAMM’s director of public affairs and government relations.

House Concurrent Resolution 121 passed the House on April 25 and now moves to the Senate.
