Activities

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) sponsored the National Nutrition Summit in Washington, D.C., on May 30 and 31, 2000. The Summit provided an opportunity to highlight accomplishments in the areas of food, nutrition, and health since the landmark 1969 White House Conference on Food, Nutrition, and Health; to identify continuing challenges and emerging opportunities for the nation in these areas; and to focus on nutrition and lifestyle issues across the lifespan, particularly those related to the nation's epidemic of overweight and obesity.

The Activities section highlights the events that occurred during the National Nutrition Summit. The audience included approximately 2,000 representatives from all levels of government, industry, academia, advocacy organizations, professional societies, and trade associations. These events included the following:

Overarching Themes—Human nutrition policy recommendations that emerged from the National Nutrition Summit.
