Background

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) sponsored the National Nutrition Summit in Washington, D.C., on May 30 and 31, 2000. The Summit provided an opportunity to highlight accomplishments in the areas of food, nutrition, and health since the landmark 1969 White House Conference on Food, Nutrition, and Health; to identify continuing challenges and emerging opportunities for the nation in these areas; and to focus on nutrition and lifestyle issues across the lifespan, particularly those related to the nation's epidemic of overweight and obesity.

The Background section provides information on the events leading up to the National Nutrition Summit. These events included the following:

Congressional Mandate—A mandate from the U.S. Senate that encourages the planning, organizing, and assembling of a conference to develop human nutrition policy recommendations.

Background Brief—A brief submitted to former Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala that outlines the purpose, proposed agenda, audience, and expectations of the National Nutrition Summit.

Sponsoring Organizations—A list of organizations whose time, commitment, and financial support made the National Nutrition Summit possible.

Committees—Lists of the different National Nutrition Summit committees.

Timeline History—Descriptions of the timeline events noted on the National Nutrition Summit Home Page.
