MMHCC Repository NCI-Frederick

Ordering Cryoarchived Strains from the MMHCC

All MMHCC Repository strains are cryopreserved and archived as frozen embryos. Quality control testing is performed at the MMHCC Repository to ensure viability and genetic integrity of the frozen material. One aliquot of each batch of embryos is thawed and live-born mice of the proper genotype are produced.

Strains that are stored as frozen embryos are marked "Cryoarchived" on the strain list. The MMHCC Repository offers two options for delivery of cryoarchived strains:

Cryorecovery of Live Animals

Mice will be recovered from cryoarchived embryos at NCI-Frederick. All animals are genotyped and health-tested prior to shipment. At least one mutant carrier will be delivered within 16-20 weeks. Cryorecovery is performed free of charge. Cryorecovered mice are shipped by special courier; the recipient laboratory is responsible for all shipping costs.

Ordering Frozen Embryos

Approximately 25-30 embryos will be provided per shipment. Embryos are delivered in a special container (liquid nitrogen dry shipper), which remains property of the National Cancer Institute and must be returned promptly. It is highly recommended the embryos be used immediately upon receipt (see Protocol for Cryopreservation and Cryorecovery [PDF]).  The recipient laboratory is responsible for all costs related to cryorecovery and return transfer of the shipping container. Since the MMHCC Repository has no control over cryorecovery methods and procedures it will not be responsible for failure to recover live mice.

All orders must be placed online through this website. To order a particular mouse model, simply select the model you are interested in from the strain list and click on the link under the “Place an Order” column.  Please fill out the order form as completely as possible. Missing information may delay the processing of your order.

For order-related questions:

Please contact Debra Fitzgerald at fitzgeraldd@mail.nih.gov or (301) 846-1544 for questions regarding the ordering and shipping process. Technical questions regarding the website and the online ordering system should be directed to the NCI-Frederick webmaster at webmaster@css.ncifcrf.gov.

After you submit the on-line order form, you will be brought to a confirmation page which has a link to the Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) for that particular mouse model. You will need to print 2 copies of this MTA and have each signed by the Recipient Scientist and the Authorized Recipient Official of your institution. An Authorized Recipient Official is someone who is authorized to sign legal documents on behalf of the institution; this person usually works in the Technology Transfer Department or the Office of Sponsored Research. The two signed originals of the MTA need to be mailed to:

Marie H. Priest
Technology Transfer Branch
National Cancer Institute
Executive Plaza South, Suite 450
6120 Executive Boulevard
Rockville, MD 20852

All questions pertaining to the MTA (clarification of terms, status of an MTA, etc.) should be directed to Marie Priest at priestm@exchange.nih.gov or (301) 435-3036.
