caBIG™ Imaging Participation in SIIM 2007 Conference

The In Vivo Imaging Workspace of the National Cancer Institute’s cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG™) presented the status of a number of its projects at the recent 2007 annual meeting of the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM, formerly the Society for Computer Applications in Radiology). The meeting, held in Providence, RI this year, brings together a broad spectrum of the Imaging community including physicians, physicists, health care administrators, PACS administrators, IT professionals, and other scientists.

The caBIG™ Imaging presence included oral presentations, poster sessions and hands-on demonstrations. Dr. Carl Jaffe (from the Cancer Imaging Program) led off with an overview presentation about the workspace, its goals and objectives. This was followed by a session entitled "Imaging Informatics in Research," in which Drs. Eliot Siegel, David Channin, and Daniel Rubin described the active projects in the workspace, including Annotation and Image Markup Development (AIM), Extensible Imaging Platform (XIP), National Cancer Imaging Archive (NCIA), and Core Middleware activities. The development teams behind these tools helped the audience understand the context into which the tools fit. All of the presentations and exhibits were well received, and there was a tangible appreciation for the significance of the Imaging Workspace's efforts, including outside of the research context.
