Strain Description: Transgenic mouse expressing Cre recombinase under control of the astrocyte-specific human GFAP promoter (Bajenaru et al., 2002). The transgene construct included an internal ribosome entry site (IRES) to allow for co-expression of Cre and beta-galactosidase (LacZ) from the same transcript. Astrocyte-specific expression of Cre and LacZ was confirmed by immunohistochemistry. Beta-galactosidase activity was first detected in the subventricular zone by embryonic day 14.5. GFAP-Cre mice are phenotypically normal. This strain has been used for astrocyte-specific inactivation of several cancer-related genes, including Nf1 (Bajenaru et al., 2002, 2003), Tsc1 (Uhlmann et al., 2002), and Pten (Fraser et al., 2004).
