Strain Description: This strain carries a targeted null mutation in the Nkx3-1 (Nkx3.1) gene, which appears to function as a tumor suppressor gene in the prostate. Homozygous males display histological defects resembling prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN) in humans. These mice appear to provide an accurate model for the early stages of prostate carcinogenesis. PIN-like lesions are less frequent on a 129/SvImJ background than on C57BL/6J or FVB/N. Heterozygous mice display a similar, less severe, phenotype, indicating haploinsufficiency. There is no reported female phenotype.
