Strain Description: Mice homozygous for this mutation (-/-) have a reduced number of circulating granulocytes, basophils and eosinophils, and a reduction in the number of circulating myeloid cells. There is no increase in spontaneous tumors over wildtype (+/+) littermates during the first year of life, but -/- mice develop more tumors than +/+ mice when exposed to dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA) followed by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA). Retinoic acid has little growth suppressive activity on embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) derived from -/- mice. MEFs derived from -/- mice grow faster than those derived from +/+ mice and are markedly better at forming colonies.
