Strain Description: | Cre expression is post-natal and is specific to prostrate epithelium. Expression is highest in the lateral lobe, followed by the ventral lobe and then the dorsal and anterior lobes. There is limited focal cre activity in the seminiferous tubules and the ovary. There is low-level expression of cre in oocytes. Male PB-Cre4 mice must be used to transmit the cre transgene to ensure tissue-specific recombination. |

Husbandry: | Breeder pairs are supplied as a hemizygote (male or female) and a C57BL/6N mate. Hemizygote 01XF5 females can be used as breeders to maintain a colony. Issues arise when 01XF5 mice are crossed with floxed mutant animals to generate tissue-specific knockouts. There is low-level expression of Cre in oocytes of 01XF5 mice, so when 01XF5 females are crossed to floxed mutants, recombination may occur in all tissues. To achieve recombination specifically in the prostate epithelium it is essential that one uses a MALE 01XF5 mouse and crosses it to a female mouse of the floxed strain. |
