Straight Talk With Sam
Protecting the 2nd Amendment

Each November, sportsmen throughout Missouri and throughout the United States take to the woods to participate in deer hunting season. Here in Missouri, the second amendment will be enjoyed by thousands of lawful sportsmen and gun enthusiasts.

With the opening of deer season, it is important to remember that while you and I cherish our second amendment right to keep and bear arms, others do not see things the same way.

This year, supporters of the second amendment experienced a historic victory in overturning the D.C. gun ban and reaffirming gun ownership as an individual right. However, we must continue to be vigilant. There are those who believe that getting rid of guns will solve all of our problems. They do not believe that our right to keep and bear arms is a fundamental right protected by the constitution.

From time to time, some in Congress have proposed weakening gun enthusiasts' rights and they will certainly try again. In the past, those attempts have failed because taking away people's rights is never the answer. We must continue to stand up against future attempts to limit our second amendment rights.

I believe in the Bill of Rights. Congress should tread very lightly when it comes to weakening any of the Amendments to the Constitution. The right to keep and bear arms is as fundamental as the right to free speech.

Our founders intended for us to have the right to keep and bear arms. I will fight any future legislation that undermines that right.
