It’s that time of year again. No, I’m not referring to Christmas shopping, family gatherings or religious services. It’s that time of year in which we our told that are beliefs and traditions are not politically correct enough to be seen in public. Almost daily we hear stories about lawsuits aimed at removing Christmas trees or whether store employees are allowed to say, “Merry Christmas.”
The political correctness movement has found its way to our nation’s Capitol as well. Earlier this year, the Architect of the United States Capitol refused to use the word “God” in an inscription accompanying a flag as requested by a 17 year old Eagle Scout. The phrase “for his dedication and love of God, country and family” was considered too offensive.
The Architect apparently missed the phrase, “In God We Trust” above the Speaker’s Chair in the House Chamber. He might also have looked at the face of Moses, which is displayed prominently over the doors as you enter the House Chamber. Moses was considered to be the ultimate law giver.
The Architect reversed course after hearing from many members of Congress. This nation was founded by Christians who believed in freedom of religion. In recent years, we’ve seen countless attempts to remove any mention of God or faith from our daily life.
I believe we should respect all religions and those who practice them. I will continue to resist attempts by bureaucrats and judges to erase religion from our public institutions.
