Congress Needs to Protect the Taxpayer |
In trying to fix our economy, Congress has spent over a trillion dollars to bailout failed companies. Now the auto industry is asking for a $25 billion taxpayer bailout. However, as was the case with the Wall Street bailout, I do not believe that spending more taxpayer money will solve the problem. Moreover, I do not believe in giving blank checks to private companies. Congress should not have used taxpayer money to bailout Wall Street and I don't believe taxpayers should bail out Detroit. Congress needs to make sure the taxpayers are protected. Unless there are changes at these companies, a one-time infusion of taxpayer money will not solve the auto industry's problems. To fix the problem, Detroit needs to become competitive again, not receive a blank check from the taxpayers. At the end of the day, these companies need to change, starting with executives who spend tens of thousands of dollars to fly to Washington to ask for taxpayer money. We need to focus on middle class families and small businesses instead of pouring more money into taxpayer bailouts. Congress should extend unemployment benefits for those actively looking for work to help those caught up in the bad economy. We also must give permanent tax relief to middle class families and put more money back in their hands. Instead of bailing out more failed companies, Congress needs to focus on those who are going to get our economy back on track. |
