Remembering Our Veterans |
This week we remember the sacrifices of our veterans. In a tradition dating back to the end of the First World War, we set aside the 11th day of November to honor the sacrifice of our veterans. Throughout our history, everyday ordinary Americans have answered their country’s call to protect freedom. Time and again, these ordinary Americans did extraordinary things in the service of their country. We find these real American heroes in every family and in every small town. These heroes are our parents and grandparents who fought on the beaches of Normandy and in the jungles of Vietnam. Now our sons and daughters, like generations of Americans before them, are answering their country’s call in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is because of our veterans that we enjoy the freedoms and liberty that we have today. From Lexington to Pearl Harbor and from San Juan Hill to our soldiers now serving overseas, our veterans have stood up for liberty and freedom. Our veterans have kept their promise to our nation and it is up to us to keep our promises to them. I am committed to making sure that our veterans receive the care they deserve when they return home from defending our freedoms. I am proud to have voted to increase veterans funding by 111% since 2001 and support expanded veterans’ education. On this Veteran’s Day, let us all remember the cost of the freedom that we enjoy and give our veterans the honor and gratitude they deserve. |
