LEVIN REACTS TO STATE OF THE UNION

(Washington D.C.)- U.S. Rep. Sander Levin (D-Royal Oak), Chairman of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Trade, offered the following comment in reaction to the State of the Union Address:

"The Bush Administration having pursued from the beginning a wrong policy on Iraq, a truly new strategy is needed to force the Iraqis themselves to determine their nation's future.  Adding more American troops is not a new strategy.

"I disagree with the President's analysis of the economy and his lack of urgency when the incomes of the majority of our citizens have been stagnant or worse during the six years of the Bush Administration. The President failed to even mention the challenges of globalization and the need to change our trade policy and stand up for U.S. businesses, workers, and farmers in the global marketplace.

"Regarding critical health, energy, and immigration policies, there is going to be a need for the Bush Administration to shift to a far more bipartisan approach than articulated tonight or true in the past."
