Service Academy Nominations
Each year I have the privilege of recommending a select group of individuals for admission to the US Service Academies: Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine. Competition for the limited number of appointments is competitive. The best time to begin the nomination process is in the spring of your junior year in high school.
I am accepting submissions for nomination from July 1 through October 31, 2008. A reviewing board will interview applicants in December, and a letter notifying students of nomination will be sent this December or January, 2009.
Students interested in applying must submit the following documents to my Grand Rapids office:
- Completed Academy Information Sheet
- Official high school or college transcript of the most recent grading period
- Statement from guidance counselor as to your projected rank in class and cumulative grade point average
- Three letters of recommendation
- ACT or SAT scores
- Current photo
These items may be mailed or delivered to my office at the Gerald R. Ford Federal Building, located at:

In addition to sending an application for my nomination, you must file applications directly with the academies you are interested in. Application information may be found in the “Admissions” sections of the Web sites linked below.
I will host an Academy Night on November 24, 2008 at the Gerald R. Ford Museum in Grand Rapids, where representatives of each academy will be on hand to provide information to prospective applicants.
