Lowell-area School Wins “We the People Bookshelf” Grant

St. Patrick School to receive books for educational programs

LOWELL, MI – Congressman Vernon J. Ehlers congratulates St. Patrick School for winning the We the People Bookshelf grant. The school will receive a collection of books based on the theme of this year’s grant, “Created Equal.” The grant is administered by the National Endowment for the Humanities, and was awarded to 3,000 libraries nationwide, including many in West Michigan.

St. Patrick School library and computer teacher Katherine Leeuwenburg says the books will help the school create educational programs about the theme of equality.

“It is an honor to receive the We the People Bookshelf from the National Endowment for the Humanities,” Leeuwenburg said. “One should never pass up the opportunity to teach equality among people, a treasured value in our country. Equal rights must be instilled at an early age for it to become a natural thought and reaction to whatever life holds.”

Congressman Ehlers congratulated St. Patrick School and other schools in his district that won the bookshelf grant. “The theme of this year’s grant is noble, and I am glad that St. Patrick School and other schools in the district will educate their students about what the Revolutionary generation meant when it declared that ‘all men are created equal,’” said Ehlers. “I am very pleased that St. Patrick School plans on incorporating the books into its curriculum.”

St. Patrick School and other schools that won the grant will receive a collection of books related to the “Created Equal” theme. St. Patrick School will create a display for the books at the front of the school and incorporate the books and their themes into the curriculum throughout the school year.
