Overview

The Nutritional Science Research Group in the Division of Cancer Prevention at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health and the Department of Nutrition at the Clinical Center, National Institutes of Health offered a one week educational opportunity in "Nutrition and Cancer Prevention Research" for post-baccalaureate nutrition students, dietetic interns, dietitians, and graduate students. This one-week intense learning session provided specialized instruction in the role of diet and bioactive food components as modifiers of cancer incidence and tumor behavior. The practicum included tours of the new NIH Clinical Research Center and the Metabolic Kitchen at USDA. Some of the cancer prevention topics/activities at the practicum were:

  • Cancer Trends
  • Bioactive Food Components
  • Bioenergetics
  • Nutrigenomics
  • Research Databases
  • Ethics & Health-Related Messages
  • Pre-Clinical & Clinical Studies
  • Hands-On Workshops at NIH Department of Nutrition "Research Day."

Participants were required to complete a database search on a research topic, summarize findings and present information at the end of the practicum. Complete instructions were provided to participants. Some preparation was required prior to practicum.

Eligibility

This practicum was open to registered dietitians and students enrolled in a CADE-accredited supervised practice program at a healthcare facility, community agency, or a foodservice corporation, or combined with undergraduate or graduate studies. Participants must have completed a bachelor's degree at a US regionally accredited university or college.

Graduate students with nutrition related backgrounds were also considered.

There was no cost for the practicum. Room, board, and transportation expenses were the responsibility of the participant.

Registration

Prior registration was required and had to consist of all of the following:

  • Curriculum Vitae (including complete address, street address, telephone, fax and e-mail)
  • Two (2) letters of support from the director of the registrant's institute or department, mentors, instructors, supervisors, or preceptors
  • One (1) page letter outlining why this practicum was important to the registrant's career development
