Mass Spectrometry Facility

The Mass Spectrometry Facility

The National Bio-Organic, Biomedical Mass Spectrometry Resource, supported by the NIH National Center for Research Resources, provides both scientific and technical expertise and state-of-the-art high-performance, tandem mass spectrometric instrumentation. The facility is a world leader in proteomic analysis although it also provides a service for small molecule analysis. Significant instrumentation in the facility include two QSTAR quadrupole orthogonal time of flight instruments, a 4700 Proteomic Analyzer MALDI tandem time of flight instrument and a recently acquired LTQ-FT linear ion trap FT-ICR instrument equipped with the ability to perform electron capture dissociation. Major research focuses within the facility are the analysis of post-translational modifications and development of methods for quantitative comparative analysis of protein and post-translational modification levels. The facility also continues to develop one of the leading suites of tools for analysis of mass spectrometry proteomics data, Protein Prospector.

International Symposium on Mass Spectrometry

The International Symposium on Mass Spectrometry in the Health and Life Sciences is held biennially in San Francisco. Al Burlingame, Director of the Department's Mass Spectrometry Facility, co-chairs this event. The program brings together world leaders in mass spectrometry instrumentation and methodology development with pioneer researchers in biology, biochemistry, and chemical biology, providing a forum for discussion of how mass spectrometry can best be used to drive knowledge in the life sciences. The 9th International Symposium on Mass Spectrometry in the Health and Life Sciences will be held August 23rd - 28th, 2009 in San Francisco. The previous Symposium's web pages are still available.

The UCSF Mass Spectrometry Facility (A.L. Burlingame, Director) is supported by the Biomedical Technology Resource Centers Program of the NIH National Center for Research Resources, NIH NCRR P41RR001614
