I Understanding TCGA

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) launched The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Pilot Project to further the scientific understanding of cancer and to create an ‘atlas’ of genomic changes involved in cancer. As a Pilot Project, TCGA is designed to assess the feasibility of a large-scale, high-throughput effort to create a data production pipeline that can uncover novel genomic changes and associations involved in human cancer.

The Pilot Project is a three-year collaboration that includes over a dozen institutes across the nation (see TCGA Research Network) and focuses on three cancer types: brain, lung and ovarian.

The overarching goal of TCGA is to improve our ability to diagnose, treat, and prevent cancer.
