DHCP Configuration for Windows 98/ME

From the desktop, right-click on "Network Neighborhood" and select "Properties" from the drop-down menu.

You will receive the following window:

If you do NOT see a line similar to "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", you cannot access the Internet and must contact the DMS help desk to have the TCP/IP protocol installed on your workstation. If the protocol is not installed and you feel comfortable doing so, install the protocol using the "Add" button before proceeding (you will need your operating system installation CD(s) as well as drivers from your network interface card in order to complete the process).

Note that there may be several lines starting with "TCP/IP". You must KNOW the type of network adapter card that you are using in such a case. If there is only one iteration of "TCP/IP", the line will simply read "TCP/IP". If there is more than one line, "TCP/IP" will be followed by an arrow " -> " and an adapter name.

Continue with the Dynamic address setup by selecting "TCP/IP -> adapter name" of the ethernet adapter you will be using on the NCI-Frederick LAN and clicking the "Properties" button. You will see the following screen:

If the screen looks EXACTLY like this, you are already configured for Dynamic addressing. Close all open windows by pressing the "OK" or "Close" buttons as appropriate. Shut down the computer. Plug your laptop into an active computer wall-plate in the conference center (check with conference staff for which plates are active). Turn on the computer and log into your LOCAL account on the laptop. You are ready to use the Internet.

However, if the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties" page looks more like the one below, you will need to perform additional proceedures.

Write down ALL of the numbers in the EXACT order that you see them on this screen. You will need them later when you are finished using the NCI-Frederick campus network.

Click the "WINS Configuration" tab. Write down ALL of the numbers in the EXACT order that you see them on this screen. You will need them later when you are finished using the NCI-Frederick campus network.

Click the "Gateway" tab. Write down ALL of the numbers in the EXACT order that you see them on this screen. You will need them later.

Click the "DNS Configuration" tab. Write down ALL of the numbers in the EXACT order that you see them on this screen. You will need these later as well.

Click the "IP Address" tab (see above). From this screen, click the TOP radio button (labled "Obtain an IP address automatically"). LEAVE ALL OTHER SETTINGS ALONE. Your screen should look like this:

Press the "OK" button to return to the "Network" window. Press the "OK" button to make the changes permanent. The computer will tell you that you need to restart. Answer "OK" or "Yes" (depends on operating system version).

Shut down the computer. Plug your laptop into an active computer wall-plate in the conference center (check with conference staff for which plates are active). Turn on the computer and log into your LOCAL account on the laptop. You are ready to use the Internet.

To return your computer to NORMAL use after making the above changes, use the same procedure to enter the "IP Address" screen. Click the 2nd radio button (labled "Specify an IP address"). Re-enter all of the information recorded prior to making the change to Dynamic addressing. Click the remaining tabs in order (WINS Configuration, Gateway, and DNS Configuration). Verify all information previously recorded and return settings back to your recorded settings as necessary. Press the "OK" or "Close" buttons as appropriate to close each window. The computer will tell you that you need to restart. Answer "OK" or "Yes" (depends on operating system version).

Shut down your computer and disconnect it from the network. Your system is now back to normal and should be able to be used in your normal work environment.
